Daily Skin Care Routine Basics
It’s a new year (finally, am I right?!), which means fresh starts and new year’s resolutions! But while it’s too easy to break your resolutions right away (*cough, cough* hello, gym membership), here’s one you will definitely want to keep: starting — and keeping — a skin care routine. So make a daily date with yourself to incorporate these skin care routine basics in your life, and in just a few weeks you’re going to have gorgeous, glowing skin.
Are you ready? Let’s go!
STARTING YOUR SKIN CARE ROUTINE
Getting gorgeous skin is as easy as 1, 2, 3!
Step 1 - Cleansing
Step 2 - Toning
Step 3 - Moisturizing
There are other steps you could include, like serums or eye creams, but those are optional and depend on your skin and age.
And that brings me to my next thought… A lot of great skincare starts with knowing what skin you’re in! Do you have oily, dry, sensitive or (*cue the angel choir*) normal skin? Skin care routine basics start here, because knowing your skin type will help you figure out what type of products will work best for YOU.
WHAT DO YOU NEED IN A SKIN CARE ROUTINE
Besides your beautiful self, there’s not a lot you need for good skin care routine basics. Your skin care routine may be different from morning to night. I’ve broken it down for you below.
IN THE AM
Morning: You’ll want a gentle cleanser like this one. Bonus points if it’s fragrance-free and doesn’t have too many ingredients. You know what I’m talking about — have you ever looked at the ingredients list in your beauty product and realized you can’t even pronounce most of them? Keep it simple, and your skin will thank you! And speaking of simple… if you have dry skin, you might not even need to wash your face in the morning. A splash of water should do just fine!
Another note on washing your face: be gentle! Pat your face dry with a clean towel. Don’t rub your face, your skin won’t like that!
Morning: After you wash or tone your skin, you’re going to want a good moisturizer. Fragrance-free is the way to go here, as all skin types will be okay with it. To my friends with oily skin out there: don’t think you can skip this step! You need moisturizer too! Just look for a label that says your moisturizer is non-comedogenic (a fancy word meaning “will not block your pores”). And, before you go out for the day, don’t forget sunscreen!
IN THE PM
If you don’t do anything else from this list (although you should!), DO NOT SKIP WASHING YOUR FACE AT NIGHT. I’m serious! You’ve been out and about all day, and your face has now been exposed to dirt, sweat, and makeup. You really want to go to bed with all that gunk on your face? I don’t think so!
Night: Wash your face. (It was so important I said it twice.)
Night: Time for toner! You could also do this step in the morning after cleansing, if you really want to, but for most skin types it probably won’t be necessary. There are different types of toners out there that will help with whatever skin issue you’ve got, whether it’s to help with acne, calm redness, or give your skin more moisture.
Night: OPTIONAL: If you want to use an eye cream or serum, here’s the time to do it. Just like toners, serums can unclog pores for acne-prone skin, help give dry skin a moisture boost, or brighten dull-looking skin. They’re super potent, so make sure you do your research to see if it is something you really need in your skin care routine!
And finally, step back and look at your beautiful face in the mirror. Smile! You look gorgeous, darling!
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU DO YOUR SKIN CARE ROUTINE
Creating your skin care routine is just the start. Once you find products you love, do your routine daily, morning and night. Don’t be discouraged if your skin is still breaking out or maybe still looks a little dull in a week. It takes several weeks for skin cells to turn over and for your skin care routine to do its magic. (Hello, science!) So it will take about two or three months before you’ll really start noticing any changes. Keep going with your skin care routine for the best results!
Hope you found these tips super helpful as you create your own skin care routine basics. I love you all so much! Stay awesome, stay sweet, and don’t forget to be nice to each other. Bye bye!
