How to Make a Crop Top From a T-Shirt

Hey, guys!

Ready for a wardrobe reset but can’t justify buying new clothes? (I get it, it’s just WAY too easy to wear the same clothes every day in lockdown!) I’ve got a fun DIY project for you to do to breathe some new life into your wardrobe using what you’ve already got in your closet. Ready to learn how to make a crop top from a T-shirt? Of course you are! Let’s get started! :)

First things first… get your materials ready. Besides an oversized T-shirt, you need a pair of fabric scissors, fabric markers, safety pins, and (optional, but helpful) fabric glue. If you’re really handy with crafts or feeling super brave, you can also have some needles and thread or (to make hemming much faster and easier) a sewing machine, but these last two things aren’t necessary.

Now that you have your T-shirt, decide where you want to cut it. You could pair it up with the pants and skirts in your wardrobe that you are thinking of wearing it with, so you can make sure the length works for those items.

Put your T-shirt on and roll it up to your preferred length. Safety pin the folds in place, and lift your arms to check how much of your skin will be exposed when the top is pushed up.

Remove the T-shirt (keep those safety pins in place!) and mark the section you’d like to cut. Take your scissors and cut where you marked the T-shirt. If you want an edgy look, leave the hem unfinished. If you want something cleaner, you can use fabric glue to hem the crop top. (If you decide you want a hemmed crop top, cut the T-shirt a little longer so you have extra fabric to fold over for the hem.)

And… that’s it! You’re done! You now have a new, awesome looking crop top!

Since you’ve learned how to make a crop top from a T-shirt, you might want to start experimenting! Creating new necklines, making a knotted crop top, making a drawstring hem — these are some of the things you can try to give your crop top some extra pizzazz. Or, it just gives you an excuse to make more crop tops! :)

Now that you know how to make a crop top from a T-shirt, it’s time to style it!

If you’re a little worried about showing some skin (or if it’s kind of too cold outside to be wearing a crop top!), try these ideas:

1. Layer your crop top over a slip dress or a camisole. If you decide to go the cami route, make sure the camisole or tank top is a few inches longer than your crop top to give you a cool, polished style.

2. Go high waisted. See, mom jeans are good for something! With a crop top, high waisted pants or shorts look absolutely elegant. Add in some strappy sandals or low heels for some added flair.

3. More layers! Instead of wearing your crop top OVER something, layer it UNDER something else, like a jean jacket, a long button-up shirt, or a chunky cardigan. This looks great if your new crop top is super fitted.

I mentioned above that you could wear a camisole or tank top under your crop top for an awesome layered look. If you want to get fancy, choose something with pretty details, like a camisole with a lace hem (or even an all lace camisole!).

For something more preppy, you could layer your crop top over a button-up shirt. A crisp white button-up shirt would match any crop top (and is a great staple to have in your wardrobe, anyway!). Or experiment with different patterns and fabrics to put under your crop top!

Another option for underneath would be to layer a T-shirt under your crop top. This looks especially good if your crop top has spaghetti straps. This is a comfy, casual option that would be a great look for school — as well as all your after school activities.

Now that you know how to make a crop top from a T-shirt, I hope you have fun creating some amazing new clothes for your closet. I love you all so much! Stay awesome, stay sweet, and don’t forget to be nice to each other. Bye bye!
