How to Wear a Dad Hat (aka the Baseball Cap)

Hey guys!

Have you ever had a bad hair day (who hasn’t!)? Or you just don’t feel like doing your hair that day? No worries, maybe it’s time you learned how to wear a dad hat!

What’s a dad hat, you ask? It’s not some crazy fashion-challenged fedora that your dear old dad wears to embarrass you, complete with groan-worthy dad jokes. It’s actually… a baseball cap. Kind of.

A dad hat is just a simple six-panel baseball cap with unstructured front panels and simple logos. The hat brim is curved, but not as much as a traditional baseball cap. Dad hats lack the frills of snapback, trucker, and fitted caps. They have a relaxed fit and are meant to be casual and comfortable. Just as the name suggests, dad hats are something your dad would wear.

Dad hats aren’t supposed to match your outfit. They’re meant to be thrown on and give you a laid back vibe. They’re the perfect hat for outdoor activities and look great with khakis, jeans, and sweats… any outfit that has a casual, comfy vibe, just like the dad hat.

Now that you know what a dad hat is, go pick up one (or several) in a fun color or style, and then let’s get to creating some effortless dad hat style!

The easiest way to know how to wear a dad hat would be, of course, to throw all your hair under the hat. You can always brush your bangs back off your forehead and put the dad hat on, but if you plan on taking the hat off, you’ll want to keep your bangs intact.

Plus, bangs with a hat can look really cute!

To style your hair with the dad hat, just brush your bangs forward. Position the dad hat back a bit on your head so the brim is angled over your bangs, sitting at the top of your forehead instead of flat across. Once you have the dad hat placed where you want it, try experimenting with your bangs — maybe parting them on the side, or styling them so your fringe is perfectly symmetrical.

And if your bangs get a little wonky after taking your dad hat off, consider carrying a hair balm with you to reshape your bangs.

Any hair style will look great with a dad hat, but if you’ve got long hair, you’ve definitely got options when it comes to styling your new dad hat!

A low ponytail is probably the most classic way to wear a dad hat for long-haired folks. Just sweep your hair up in a ponytail and place the hat on top.

A low, loose bun is also another option if you want to put your hair up and keep your hat on.

Want something a little fancier? Try a side braid with your dad hat! A fun fishtail braid with your dad hat is the perfect mix of cute and casual.

Or let your hair down under your hat, and show off your layered hair look or create some soft waves to soften up your look.

Most of these styles assume you’re wearing your dad hat brim forward, but you can also create a fun look by turning things around.

It’s super easy… turn your hat around so the brim is at the back of your head. Done!

If you’re going backwards, you probably want to wear your hair down. Also, this would be considered an extremely super casual look (even more casual than your dad hat is right now!), so make sure you wear it in appropriately casual settings.

Now you know how to wear a dad hat, but what do you wear WITH a dad hat?

You can wear pretty much anything!

A sweatshirt or jacket is great for every day. If it’s hot out, then a T-shirt, crop top, tank top, or v-neck shirt would work. Even a slip dress would look great with a dad hat. Layer a flannel shirt over your dress for a stylish but casual option.

Jeans, khakis, sweatpants, or leggings are all good casual pant options for your dad hat.

And, of course, you can always wear it with your favorite sports jersey!

Just don’t wear it with super formal items, like a blazer or formal dress. Dad hats are meant to be casual and easy styles, not meant for special occasions.

Now that you know how to wear a dad hat, I hope you have fun rocking this casual and comfy style. I love you all so much! Stay awesome, stay sweet, and don’t forget to be nice to each other. Bye bye!
